वन एक अतिजटिल पारिस्थितिक तन्त्र है। इसका निर्माण वृक्षों, झाड़ियों, लताओं, पेड़-पौधों के साथ-साथ जन्तुओं, मृदा, वायुमण्डल, जल आदि के पारस्परिक सम्बन्धों से होता है। वन में वृक्षों एवं अन्य काष्ठीय पदपों की प्रमुखता एवं बाहुल्य पायी जाती है। वन बहुआयामी प्रकृति के होते हैं। इनके द्वारा मानव की सभी प्रकार की आवश्यकताएँ पूर्ण की जा सकती हैं।
Forest is a very complex ecosystem. It is formed by the mutual relations of trees, shrubs, vines, plants as well as animals, soil, atmosphere, water etc. Predominance and abundance of trees and other woody plants are found in the forest. Forests are multifaceted in nature. All kinds of human needs can be fulfilled by them.

वनों के प्रमुख प्रत्यक्ष लाभ एवं उपयोग निम्नलिखित हैं–
1. वनों से हमें कई प्रकार के उपयोगी पदार्थ प्राप्त होते हैं।
2. वनों में अनेक जनजातियाँ निवास करती हैं। इन जनजातियों के लोगों की सभी आवश्यकताएँ वनों के द्वारा ही पूरी होती हैं।
3. वनों से अनेक प्रकार की उपयोगी लकड़ियाँ प्राप्त की जाती हैं। इन लकड़ियों का प्रयोग अनेक कार्यों में किया जाता है। उदाहरण के लिए, भवन निर्माण, साज-सज्जा आदि।
4. वनों से प्राप्त लकड़ी का प्रयोग ईंधन के रूप में किया जाता है।
5. लकड़ी से कोयला बनाकर उसका प्रयोग ऊर्जा प्राप्त करने के लिए किया जाता है।
6. वनों से रबर प्राप्त की जाती है। रबर का प्रयोग अनेक कार्यों में किया जाता है।
7. वनों के द्वारा कई प्रकार की गोंद, लाख, छाल, जड़ी-बूटियाँ, तारपीन का तेल आदि प्राप्त होते हैं।
8. वनों से उद्योगों का कच्चा माल प्राप्त होता है।
9. वनों में अनेक प्रकार के वन्य-जीव निवास करते हैं।
10. वन प्राकृतिक सुन्दरता के केन्द्र होते हैं। इससे देशी एवं विदेशी पर्यटक आकर्षित होते हैं।

1. वनों के वृक्षों की पत्तियाँ टूटकर धरातल पर गिर जाती हैं। कुछ दिनों बाद ये सड़ने-गलने लगती हैं। इससे मिट्टी में ह्यूमस का निर्माण होता है। इसके फलस्वरुप मृदा की उर्वरता बढ़ती है।
2. वन बर्फीले बादलों को आकर्षित करते हैं। इससे धरातल पर वर्षा होती है।
3. वन जलवायु की कठोरता को कम करते हैं।
4. वन मृदा अपरदन को कम करते हैं। इससे बाढ़ में कम आती है।
5. वनों की सहायता से दलदली और मरुस्थलीय प्रदेशों के विस्तार को कम किया जा सकता है।
6. पेड़-पौधों एवं जीव-जन्तुओं के वनों की मिट्टी की परतों में दबने से ही लाखों-करोड़ों वर्षों बाद कोयला और पेट्रोलियम प्राप्त होता है।
7. वन सूक्ष्म जलवायु बनाये रखने में सहायक होते हैं।
The following are the main indirect benefits and uses of forests–
1. Leaves of forest trees break and fall on the ground. After a few days they start to rot. This leads to the formation of humus in the soil. As a result the fertility of the soil increases.
2. Forests attract icy clouds. It rains on the surface.
3. Forests reduce the harshness of the climate.
4. Forests reduce soil erosion. This reduces floods.
5. With the help of forests, the expansion of marshy and desert regions can be reduced.
6. Coal and petroleum are obtained after millions and millions of years only due to the burial of plants and animals in the soil layers of forests.
7. Forests help in maintaining micro climate.
