Court Art of the Mauryan Period

2959

Mauryan rulers started court art and architectural works for political as well as religious reasons, which is known as court art. It includes Mahals, Pillars and Stupa.

Mahal or Fort- The Maurya Empire was the first powerful empire to establish power in India. The capital at Pataliputra and the palace at Kumrahar are clear examples of the splendor of the Maurya Empire. Chandragupta Maurya's palace was inspired by the Akamenian palace of Persepolis, Iran. It was mainly built of wood. Megasthenes called it one of the greatest creations of mankind. Similarly, the palace of Emperor Ashoka located in Kumrahar was also very huge. It had a high pillar and was a three-storeyed wooden structure. The walls of the palace were decorated with carvings and sculptures.
