(Rainy Season)

Winter Season And Summer Season In India

A low pressure area is formed in the northern plains in the beginning of June in India. This region attracts the trade winds of the Southern Hemisphere. These trade winds from the southeast originate in the sub-tropical regions of the southern seas. These winds pass over warm oceans. These winds bring with them a large amount of moisture (humidity) in India. These winds are very strong. They travel at an average velocity of 30 km per hour. Apart from the far north-eastern regions, these winds reach the rest of the country in about a month. These winds are known as 'monsoon winds' in India.

Indian Monsoon Arrival And Withdrawal

India receives inflow of south-west monsoon during the rainy season. Due to this the weather of the country changes completely. At the beginning of the season, the windward regions of the Western Ghats receive heavy rainfall. This rainfall is more than about 250 cm. The Deccan plateau and some areas of Madhya Pradesh receive rainfall. Both these areas come under the rain shadow region. Most of the rainfall of this season falls in the north-eastern parts of the country. The highest rainfall occurs in Masinram. Masinram is situated in the southern ranges of the Khasi Hills. This region receives the highest average rainfall in the world. The amount of rainfall decreases from east to west in the Ganges valley. Parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat receive very little rainfall.

(Rain Break)

The rainy season has both wet and dry intervals. In other words, monsoon rains occur only for a few days at a time. They also have rainless intervals. These breaks in the monsoon are related to the movement of the monsoon trough. Due to various reasons, the trough and its axis keep shifting towards north or south. Due to this the spatial distribution of rainfall is ensured. When the axis of the monsoon trough is above the plain, then these areas receive good rainfall. On the other hand the axis goes near the Himalayas. In this condition, the plains remain dry for a long time. Also, there is extensive rainfall in the mountain catchment areas of the Himalayan rivers. This heavy rainfall causes devastating floods in the plains. Also, there is heavy loss of life and property. The intensity and frequency of tropical low pressure also determines the amount and timing of monsoon rainfall. This low pressure area is formed over the Bay of Bengal and crosses the main land area. This trough follows the axis of the low pressure monsoon trough. Monsoon is known for its uncertainty. Dry and wet conditions vary in intensity, frequency and duration. Because of this, if there is a flood in one part, then there is a drought in the other part. Its arrival and return are often chaotic. Hence it sometimes disturbs the agricultural operations of the farmers of the country. Due to this farmers suffer loss.
