Drainage System in India– Himalayan Rivers and Peninsular Rivers

2765

The control of India's drainage system is mainly through geographical features. The drainage system of India can be mainly classified into two parts–
1. Himalayan Rivers
2. Peninsular Rivers
The Himalayan rivers and peninsular rivers differ because of their origin from two different geographical regions of India.

(Himalayan Rivers)

The Himalayan rivers have water throughout the year. These rivers are perennial. Apart from rain, they also get water from the melting snow from the high mountains of the Himalayas. Major rivers of the Himalayas originate from the northern part of these mountain ranges. These major rivers are the Indus, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. The length of these rivers is very long. Many important and tributaries join them. The major rivers of the Himalayas cross the mountains to form gorges while moving in their course. These rivers cover a long route from their origin to the sea. These rivers undergo rapid erosion in the upper part of their course. Apart from this, they carry a huge amount of silt and sand with them. In the middle and lower parts of their course, these rivers form the Visarp and Gokhur lakes. Also, these rivers form many depositional structures in the flood plains. These rivers also form fully developed deltas. The soil of these deltas is very fertile. That's why agriculture is done in these deltaic regions.

(Peninsular Rivers)

These rivers are seasonal. Their flow depends only on rain water. During the dry season the water in the major rivers of peninsular India gets reduced. Due to this these rivers start flowing in the form of small streams. The peninsular rivers are smaller as compared to the Himalayan rivers. Their length is short and they are shallow. Some peninsular rivers originate from the central highlands and flow westwards. Most of the rivers of peninsular India originate from the Western Ghats and flow towards the Bay of Bengal.
