Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra are the three major rivers of the northern region of India. These important river systems and their tributaries have formed the northern plain of India. Over millions of years, the alluvium was deposited from a very wide basin located in the foothills of the Himalayas. As a result a very wide plain (Northern Plain) was formed. This plain is made up of alluvial soil. The soil here is very fertile. The length of this northern plain is about 2,400 km. The width of this plain is about 240 to 320 kilometers. This plain is the densely populated region of India. It is the most useful area of India from the point of view of agriculture. It has rich soil cover, adequate water availability and favorable climate.

(River Islands and Distributaries)

At present various rivers coming from the Himalayan mountains are engaged in the deposition work. Due to the lower slope of the river, the speed of the river decreases. As a result 'river islands' are formed. A river island named 'Majoli' is situated in the Brahmaputra river. It is the largest riverine island in the world. People live here. These rivers collect silt in their lower part. Due to this the rivers get divided into many streams. These streams are known as 'distributions'.

(Doab and Punjab)

The literal meaning of Doab is the part between two rivers. Doab is made up of two words– Do and Aab. Here ab means water. Similarly, Punjab is also made up of two words– Panj and Aab. Here panj means five and aab means water.

World And India (And Its Neighboring Countries)

The western part of the northern plain is called the plain of the Indus or the plain of the Punjab. This plain is formed by the Indus and its tributaries. A large part of this ground is in Pakistan. The number of doabs in the Indus plain is very high. The major tributaries of the Indus River are Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej and Beas. The Indus and all its rivers originate from the Himalaya Mountains. The Ganges plain extends between the Ghaggar and Teesta rivers. This plain is extended in the important northern states of India, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, parts of Bihar and West Bengal. The Brahmaputra plain is situated to the west of this plain. The Brahmaputra plain extends mainly in Assam, India.

2. तराई
4. खादर

Mostly the northern plains of India are interpreted as flat land. No special importance is given to the diversity of its reliefs. This is wrong. The geographical features of these wide northern plains also differ (morphological variation). On this basis the northern plain can be classified into the following parts–
1. Bhabar
2. Terai
3. Bhangar
4. Khadar

(Bhabar)

Some important rivers originating from the Himalayas, while descending from the mountains, deposit gutika in a wide strip of 8 to 16 km on the slopes of Shivalik. This creates a field. It is called 'Bhabar'. It is a fertile plain.

(Terai)

All the river systems coming through the slopes of Shivalik get extinct in the Bhabar belt. In the south of this belt, these streams and rivers again emerge. This creates a moist and marshy area. This area is known as 'Tarai'. There are dense forests in this area and wild animals live there. After the partition of India and Pakistan, there was a need to give agricultural land to the refugees from Pakistan. Therefore, many parts of this forest have been cut down to provide arable land.

(Bhangar)

Bhangar is the largest part of the northern plain. It is formed from old alluvium. This area is situated above the flood plains of rivers. It shows the shape of a altar. Limestone deposits are found in the soil of this region. This deposit is called 'pebble' in the local language.

(Khadar)

New and young deposits of flood plains are known as 'Khadar'. These are fertile plains. Almost every year they are rebuilt due to floods. These areas are ideal for intensive farming. Due to the fertile plains, a large number of people are engaged in agricultural work.
